Why Circular Fashion Matters
Australia has one of the highest clothing consumption rates in the world. On average, each Australian purchases more than 50 new clothing items every year, many of which are worn only a handful of times before being discarded.
Each year:
- Over 300,000 tonnes of clothing are sent to landfill or exported from Australia
-
More than 220,000 tonnes of clothing end up in Australian landfill alone
- Less than 7% of textiles are recycled
Most of these garments could have been reused.
Circular fashion offers a practical solution — keeping clothing in use for longer, reducing demand for new production, and lowering the environmental footprint of what we wear. Buying preloved saves water, energy and resources already embedded in clothing and helps slow the cycle of overproduction and disposal.
Hope + Love exists to make this choice easier, more accessible, and considered.
